There is something alluring about a 90 degree profile shot, don't you think?! The portrait offers a glimpse, arousing curiosity of the complete, thereby keeping the viewer interested in the image.
It can make a statement bringing out the powerful persona of the subject itself, like here, or put in focus the soft warmth of the subject, like here.
And, this Strawberry Buttermilk Cake, which, is our subject for the day. Such a simple, no fuss cake that belies the depth of flavor in each bite and the happiness that it can bring. Makes me forget the eccentricities of the day and lets me just relax and savour each bite juiced up with plump, ripe, sweet Spring strawberries.
Yes, I think the profile is the best way to capture its charm!

For the moment, weekend life has relapsed into comfort.. Comfort of good friends catching up, trying new things to do in NYC, making plans for the hopefully-incumbent warmer weather and dining on, bowling, silly girly chatter and so forth..
Somehow, it fills up the regretably short weekends and I have not really had time to cook or bake elaborate stuff. So, we have been enjoying simple meals that don't take a lot of time, like this South Indian stew, salads, breakfasts for dinner... We play monopoly... I usually win. I like that.. :)
In between, I managed this simple sweet bite. If you have noticed, there has not been too many sweet posts this year. No, not a healthy drive.. I believe in eating everything moderation. It's just that, I have not tried a whole lot of new stuff but this one needed a mention now...

This one is a great coffee/tea cake. I made it not too sweet which made sure that it did not overwhelm the flavor of sweet milk but in an incomprehensible way, accentuates it!
So, have a great week, everyone! One day this week, make it better by enjoying a slice of this cake, or sharing it wihth

1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla paste
2 egg yolks
1 egg white
1/2 cup well-shaken buttermilk
1/4 tsp salt
chopped fresh strawberries, handful or as you like

Preheat oven to 400°F. Butter and flour a 8 inch round cake pan. Mix the dry ingredients together. Cream together butter and 1/2 cup of sugar until pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes, then beat in vanilla.
Add the egg yolks and beat well. At low speed, mix in flour mixture in 3 batches, alternating with buttermilk, mixing until just combined. Set aside and whip the egg whites till frothy. Gently drizzle in the sugar and continue whipping until the meringue holds stiff peaks.
Fold about a 1/3 of the meringue into the batter to loosen it. Gently fold the remaining whites just until you no longer see any white streaks, about 25 strokes. Spoon batter into cake pan, smoothing top.
Scatter strawberry pieces over the top. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until cake is golden and a wooden pick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack and cool to warm, 10 to 15 minutes more.
Serve with fresh sweetened yogurt for dessert or mint tea.

Yummm this cake looks soo good!
Perfect cake to accompany evening teas!
That is a beautiful cake. You can tell how moist it is and I love how many strawberries you packed in there.
Oh wow. This is beautiful. I wish I had some right now.
Yum yum yum...saw one like this at Aran's and now here. tells me i must try this yumminess sometime soon. it's beautiful Asha ... and with my love for fruit in baking and buttermilk, it's right up my street!
The cake looks like the bottom and sides are overdone. Does the center take much longer to set because of the berries or was the temp a little too high for this recipe?
Lisbeth
im pretty sure i commented but its not here so ill do it again. beautiful!!!! i hate photographing cakes....just find it hard but uve done an awesome job....i picked up a load of strawberries at the farmer's market this weekend and this looks perfect for it!
Oh, this looks so beautiful! You're right, a 90-degree profile shot definitely suits this dimply pretty cake :) Wish I had discovered this earlier; I just finished up both my strawberries and buttermilk!
Love the flavor and texture you get from buttermilk in baked goods. Looks really yummy, Asha!
Lisbeth: neither :) I just kept it in a teeny bit too long coz I was distracted.
love the silk, love the cake, love the shot!
Asha the first link in the post is leading to an error message - broken link?
I am also a fan of the 90 degree shot, and a new fan of this cake - YUM!
Your "not too sweet" description sold me. I love buttermilk-based cakes and I enjoy them more when the fruit's sweetness shines instead of the sugar. This looks like a winner to me. :-)
cake looks fabulous dear...yummy.
What a beautiful cake Asha!
This looks so wholesome and delicious. I love the dimples from the strawberries.
That gorgeous golden color with the dimples of red from the strawberry is making me crave a slice of this so badly right now!
What a perfect springtime cake! Beautiful photos too!
ooh! Like strawberry shortcake all in one- I love it! Beautiful and tempting photos too! Now I'm impatient for strawberry season.
Now I long even more for strawberry season to start! This looks absolutely delicious!
That looks wonderful. I can't wait to find strawberries.
You photos are gorgeous, and that cake looks so delicious! I can just imagine sinking my fork into that... Yum!
So alluring! The strawberry looks like flower petals :D
This cake looks delectable! I love the simplicity of it! =)
Thank a lot for dropping by. Me a big fan of yours :) the clicks are awsm!
I love strawberry and i like cakes with fruit flavor .. this is gorgeous!
This cake looks lovely. I'd try to sneak it into a busy weekend too!
strawberry cake looks delicious
Beautiful photos. The color from the strawberries is just wonderful.
gorgeous photos - I love that the strawberries seem to be peeking out from the cake!
Do you think vanilla paste vs vanilla extract vs vanilla bean would make a difference in your recipe? I have a fridge full of strawberries from the farmers market, plenty of vanilla extract and 2 beans but no paste. Thoughts?
Found you via PW. Congrats on being featured. I had to check this out--I recently made a variation on this cake too but using yogurt over buttermilk. It's a great cake isn't it? So basic and comforting. Lovely lovely photos.
Beth: Not at all. I find the beans are too expensive, so use the paste. But you can definitely sub with the extract :)
Sarah: thanks for stopping by! :)) yes, indeed, I like simple cakes that always deliver :D
I saw you posted on PW too! This cake is *gorgeous* - can't wait to try actually putting it in my mouth, as opposed to just staring at it open mouthed. :) I will have to make this soon!
Love the photo and the cake looks delicious! I'm going to play with it a bit (use whole wheat flour, add some flaxmeal, etc) and see if I can turn it from dessert into a relatively healthy main dish for dinner! Why not, right? Can't wait to try it!
Hi! I also followed the link from PW and am on my way to the kitchen to try this recipe after jotting it down on a scrap of paper. Mmmmm!
Do you think you could put the ingredients in order in the recipe? I just write directions next to the ingredients (after copying the ingredient list), and there are long lines connecting things like flour, powder, & salt all over my paper. Confusing! But it looks yummy enough to be worth unscrambling it all when I get to the kitchen.
Cheers.
HI!, I have a similar recipe with pineapple, I think it´s the season for strawberries now, if I make your cake, I´ll let you know. I´ll give your name in my blog if I make it, I hope you don´t mind, if so, let me know.
Love from Spain

I am going to hit the farmers market this weekend for strawberries and make one for work, and one for the girls at Princes Persistent's daycare.
YUM!
If the other berries are looking good I might add some of each kind.
Thank you very much for sharing this great menu, it looks delish and totally organic. It reminded me of some of the stuff I saw on this new show called Extreme Chef http://www.facebook.com/pages/Extreme-Chef/195324160502642
Love it! Looks so tasty and soft.
It looks beautiful! I'll most definitely be trying this soon.
