YAY! 200!! I can't believe it! I am so thrilled on being at this mile marker. So cool! {pats self on the back}. I didn't think it would come so soon or in such a way. What better way to reach that marker than with a challenge post. And, a sweet one to boot! LOL
Ok, a quick pause for the official lines... The October 2010 Daring Bakers challenge was hosted by Lori of Butter Me Up. Lori chose to challenge DBers to make doughnuts. She used several sources for her recipes including Alton Brown, Nancy Silverton, Kate Neumann and Epicurious.

Before we go on with the rest of this post, I must admit that I followed none of those recipes. When I first read the challenge, Lara Ferroni's book, dedicated to these fried bites of sugar, had just come out. I seriously contemplated buying it, or atleast renting it from B&N. But, then sense prevailed and I sensibly fell back on my tried and tested blog trawling.
Sense being that while I do get doughnut cravings they are few and so far between that you could call it rare. I avoid deep fried, especially sweet, items as much as possible. I mean, I don't even have to make an effort. I think, in general, baked >> fried. Now that bit of firm belief was to be shaken here.

I picked up one of the recipes around the net, modified (well.. of course!) it and set about baking and frying my doughnuts yesterday. I had been reading a lot about these baked doughnuts and decided this was perfect opportunity to test. Plus I was running low on oil at home :D.
For the purposes of fair (??) comparison, I used the same yeasted dough for both preparations. For the fried, I used a filling of homemade apple butter. I should have piped it in after frying but I thought I would try the ravioli method. It wasn't a big success as you can see. Nevertheless, there was a lot of apple flavor. The bits on top are dried apple pieces, slowly dehydrated in a low oven.

Verdict: I have to say that the fried ones trumped the baked in a decisive rout!! The baked, to me, tasted like slightly sweetened bread with fairy dust. Not satisfying at all! Having said that, even my fried donuts were no comparison to Krispy Kremes. So, the next time, I think I'll just head over to the neighbourhood store.. :)
Before you go, a gentle reminder that voting for Project Food Blog is ongoing. If you like my posts, please do vote for me to move to the next round here.
And, if you'd like the challenge recipe, here is a link.

Your little doughnuts with the dehydrated apples on top look so cute! It's too bad they didn't taste as good as they look. I too am not a fan of deep frying, but my deep-fried fritters were very good. Still, Top Pot Doughnuts takes the cake any day. Nice job on the challenge!
ReplyDeleteBaked will never compare to deep fried, natch! They LOOK beautifu though ^_^ I made beignets a while back and they were better than any bought doughnut, I must say.
ReplyDeleteYour doughnuts look perfect, Asha.
ReplyDeleteHave been wanting to bake doughnuts for a while, but I knew the fried ones would be the best so I fried mine, this time too. :D
Wow, I love your donuts and the donuts holes as well :)
ReplyDeleteGood job!!
I'll keep in touch and follow your blog: it's really cool!
Cheers
Jasmine
Beautiful doughnuts! Well done.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Rosa
I'm sorry to hear you didn't like the baked ones that much, but you should try the Alton's Brown recipe - the donuts are ten times better than store-bought. Anyway, your photos are stunning!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the 200th post and the doughnut looks very tempting.
ReplyDeleteWow, congrats!!
ReplyDeleteyay on your 200th! :) what an achievement/milestone! im not a huge fan of doughnuts but yours look so posh and elegant esp with the dried apples on top! looks like toffee/caramel at first!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 200 fabulous posts! I knew fried would beat baked!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on ur 200th post, keep rocking..
ReplyDeleteBeautiful looking doughnuts..
Loved the antique feel of the pictures....
ReplyDeleteCheers , Ann
Congrats on your milestone..Lovely clicks!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 200th post Asha. Doughnuts look great. And I generally agree on baked>>fried!
ReplyDeleteI'm approaching the 100 post mark... I can't imagine reaching 200! That's incredible! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't think of a better way to celebrate than with homemade donuts! They look fantastic!
You see; you should have used Lara's recipe for baked doughnuts and then you would have liked them more...lol... I loved mine (but then they were topped with chocolate, so what's not to like) and I also loved the fried ones. Soooo much better then what we can get here in the doughnut department! Yours do look very pretty with the apple on top!
ReplyDeleteYay congratulations on #200!
ReplyDeleteMmm I can haz doughnuts for my breakfast? yes
Even though I thought my baked ones weren't all that bad, I'm still going to have to agree with you that fried doughnuts are simply better. Yours look wonderful - great job on the challenge!
ReplyDeletecongrats to the 200 post aniv. the doughnuts look so good and your photography is so sweet... well done and all the best for the upcoming 200 posts.
ReplyDeleteCool! Great job Asha! I love your doughnuts, they look so delicious and glossy! And I adore the style of your shots as well, as ever!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 200th post! Really great job, all of the donuts look great. And I think it is great that you tried both frying and baking them. Great challenge!
ReplyDeleteI tried the baked ones and did not think of frying them because I don't like fried things. But after reading your post and that of others DBs, I guess I should do that "fair comparison" :-) Congrats on a great challenge!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 200th post!
ReplyDeleteThe doughnuts look wonderful and I love the sound of apple butter filling - yum!
I think baked doughnuts must be pretty similar to brioche; what do you think?
UK4dz, thanks! :))
ReplyDeletew.r.t baked doughnuts, no, unf they weren't even like brioche. not many eggs in the dough. it was more milk bread.. good one I agree.. still bread :D
They look great. I came to the conclusion that I'll just head to the shops next time I want a doughnut too.
ReplyDeleteYour doughnuts look gorgeous, especially the fried ones with the dried apple on top. I really wanted to make an apple-filled one too, but didn't get around to it and I have to force myself to stop, now that the challenge is over.
ReplyDelete:)
I have never heard anything positive about baked doughnuts. Too bad though they are undoubtedly a good idea at least. Even if the fried ones didn't taste as good as you thought they should have they looked gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou're cooking so much I can hardly keep up. The doughnuts look sensational. Yum!
ReplyDeleteFab donuts Asha. Yes agree, baked don't stand up to fried donuts! Some things are just better the traditional way. Congrats on the 200th! Lara Ferroni's donut recipes are fabulous. I had the honour of playing recipe tester when her book was in the pipeline, and the ones I tested were outstanding! The books on my wishlist!!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the dehydrated apples on top and your photography is excellent as always, yes you cannot beat deep frying really. Well done on this challenge.
ReplyDeleteCheers from Audax in Sydney Australia.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 200th Post, Asha! Lovely! And what better way to celebrate than with plates of doughnuts! I love both your versions and the apple ones are great! And I do see that a fried doughnut is better, after all what else is a doughnut but fried dough? Love 'em!
ReplyDeleteThese look wonderful! Great photos too!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you went through all the trouble of making two batches - was there any question fried would win? :) But that's okay - we got to see more of your gorgeous pics!
